Frequently Asked Questions

The 4x4 Vehicles

What do I need to hire a Bushlore 4wd vehicle?
  • You will need to be between the ages of 22 and 75 with a valid drivers license.
  • You will need a credit card
  • Bookings must be made in advance
  • A deposit will be required to secure and full payment on the day of collection
Do I need prior 4x4 experience?

Prior 4wd driving experience is not essential as we will give a you a briefing on arrival but we do recommend you do some research on general 4×4 driving prior to arriving.

The operation of engaging 4wd is simple and then if you drive cautiously you should be fine.

In sand you should keep your momentum through the thicker parts without speeding. Try and avoid mud and don’t cross obstacles you are not comfortable with.

There are areas we do recommend prior 4wd driving, these may include some areas of Botswana and the kaokoland in Namibia.

What happens in the case of a breakdown?

We offer 24 hour road assistance and any mechanical problem caused through normal use or fair wear and tear is our responsibility. We will diagnose the problem and then either recommend you take to a workshop at our expense if you are still mobile or we will replace the vehicle in the case of more major issues.

Is it safe to self drive?

Self drive is very safe and more popular than ever in southern Africa. Like anywhere you need to be diligent in certain areas.

In 17 years we have never had any client injured or worse through a criminal activity.

No one has been injured by an animal accept where negligence was involved.

Always drive safely and responsibly as like anywhere in the world motor vehicle accidents are your biggest risk. Most of our clients are taken back with how friendly the African people are.

Destinations

Where can I collect vehicles?

We can deliver vehicles to most cities but if outside our normal offices this will attract delivery fees. We do recommend using one of our 4 offices or depo’s. We have offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, Kasane in Botswana and Windhoek, Namibia. Vic falls is very close to Kasane.

In which countries do you need 4wd?

4×4 is not essential in South Africa however it does open up your access to some of the most special parts of the country and these include the Richtersveld, Kgalagardi Transfrontier Park, Kosi Bay and St Lucia wetland and coastal areas. The wild coast and Baviaanskloof. Lesotho and the Sani pass. Some areas of the Waterberg and some very special parks in Limpopo are only accessible by 4wd.

Also don’t forget the exclusivity of the kruger 4wd trails. 4×4 campers offer complete flexibility and far better ride height for game viewing. Rather have it and not need it that need it and not have it. Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia 4wd is essential to visit any of the parks. Namibia it is recommended and it is essential in many parts of Mozambique.

Lastly all these areas have many ‘remote parts’ where all the additional equipment we supply with our vehicles like long range fuel tanks, dual batteries and second spares to mention a few are highly recommended for safe travel.

What countries can we travel in your vehicles?

We allow our vehicles to South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique as well as Malawi, Tanzania, Angola, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda.

Trip Planning

Can you assist with our trip planning and booking?

Yes we like to share in our knowledge and experience of the southern African region and assist with itineraries and route planning. We have a dedicated reservations department which assist with accommodation bookings and trip planning. This is exclusively to clients using our vehicles.

What is the cost to use the reservations service?

In most cases it should not cost you additional to use this service, we get a commission from the accommodation establishments so whether you book direct or with us you will pay the normal list prices.

Is it advisable to prebook all campsites and accommodation?

This does make for the most comfortable way to self – drive so early booking is a big advantage. It is not essential to book everything and many clients arrive with no bookings and manage to visit just about anywhere BUT to avoid being turned away at parks or having lengthy discussions and unnecessary stress it is advisable to book in advance and as early as possible. The national parks are becoming increasingly busy so securing key bookings is always recommended.

Do you have sample routes that we can use for our own trip?

We’ve been doing this for over 2 decades, both in our private capacity and as a business. We know where to go and how to get there. Our sample routes are purely and indication of what is possible and what we would suggest based on our experience in 4×4 trips across Africa. Use our sample routes as a foundation to start planning your self-drive 4×4 trip. You will find our sample routes on the different destination pages under DESTINATIONS in the top menu.

Accommodation

Is it possible to combine camping and lodges on our trip?

Yes, it is possible. Our vehicles are equipped with some of the best camping gear available, so you can camp all the way and still have an amazing holiday! But it’s always enjoyable to spend a night in a lodge along the way. Let us know if you’d like to do this and we will suggest the most suitable options on your route.

How comfortable is the camping equipment and campers?

A Bushlore self-drive trip is all about experiencing Africa! We design our vehicle and equipment to make the journey as comfortable as possible without spending hours setting up camp and cooking. As an example, our 4×4 camper sets up in about 60 seconds! Have a look at the equipment listed under each vehicle. You will be pleasantly surprised at the range of equipment included.
